None of us ever knew Art Charbonneau, but we live in a province that functions, and continues to function, because of the work and sacrifice of people like Art. We are honoured to be in a profession where have the privilege of acknowledging lives like Mr. Charbonneau’s.

Arthur Leo Charbonneau, affectionately known as Art, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, at the age of 85. A devoted public servant and cherished community member, Art’s commitment to the people of Kamloops and British Columbia left a lasting legacy.

Born on August 20, 1939, Art Charbonneau dedicated much of his life to public service and leadership. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Kamloops from 1991 to 1996, representing the New Democratic Party. During his tenure, he held several pivotal cabinet positions, including Minister of Transport and Highways, Minister of Forests, Minister of Education, and Minister of Government Services and Sport. Known for his integrity, intelligence, and unwavering dedication, Art earned the respect of colleagues and constituents alike.

Art’s leadership was marked by a rare combination of sharp intellect and warmth. Colleagues and staff remember him as a kind and generous man who treated everyone with respect and decency. His great sense of humour and genuine care fostered strong personal connections throughout his career. Even after choosing not to run in the 1996 election, Art remained engaged with friends and colleagues, often sharing thoughtful reflections and through emails. A testament to the esteem in which he was held was a retirement celebration organized by his Kamloops constituency, where former staff and colleagues gathered to honour his service and friendship.

Beyond his public life, Art was deeply appreciated for his personable nature and kindness. His legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments to the many personal relationships he nurtured, all marked by warmth, humour, and principled leadership.

Art is survived by his loving family, who treasure his memory and the example he set. Details regarding services will be shared as they become available. The family invites all who knew Art to join in remembering a man admired for his heart, character, and dedication.
